Retainers are used to hold your teeth in the correct position. They are very important to prevent shifting of your teeth. Your retainer should be worn all the time except for eating and brushing for the first six months after you get your braces off. After six months, the teeth are more stable, and only nighttime wear is necessary. You will want to continue wearing your retainer at night forever.

Are there different types of retainers?

Yes. A bonded lingual retainer is a permanent wire placed behind the teeth to hold the front teeth in place.

A clear retainer fits over the teeth like Invisalign®. It can stretch over time and may need to be replaced periodically.

A Hawley retainer is a removable retainer with a wire on the outside of the teeth. The wire can be adjusted so that the retainer stays snug. The retainer is removed to eat so there are no food restrictions. This is the most popular retainer and it comes in many different colors and designs.
